Horse Meat Labeled as BeefA campaign group has raised concerns over the safety of horsemeat imported to Europe from non-EU countries. The Humane Society International (HSI) renewed the call after concerns horsemeat with drugs banned in the EU for human consumption could be entering the food chain.

Thursday marked the four-year anniversary of the EU’s strict import requirements for products of animal origin.
Animal rights group HSI says horsemeat imported from outside the EU should be banned, as measures to stop meat with illegal veterinary drugs, such as phenylbutazone, are flawed.

Joanna Swabe, HSI EU director, said, “These EU import requirements look great on paper, but the implementation thereof by non-EU countries has been farcical.”

HSI says food standards are flawed in the US and countries like Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay are also vulnerable to fraud.

Swabe added, “Even the European Commission’s own audits have highlighted this, which makes it all the more outrageous that they have failed to take action to suspend the import of horsemeat products that do not meet EU food safety standards.”

Recent analysis by the European Commission has found areas on the meat market that do not look after customers as well as they should.

This is the ONLY way we will ever stop our horses from Slaughter in the U.S…. Our politicians will not end it…They have a Bill the #PastAct to end horse soring with 305 rep’s and 57 senators the most co-sponsors of ANY bill introduced and Boehner just said NO FLOOR VOTE, so you see IF we all think the U.S. is going to end horses going over the borders we can think again. They could care less, not even about Federal Laws being broken by kill buyers, not even about global food safety… I for one and disgusted with all of our governing body… NOT ALL but most….

No horses should be imported from any where to go to other countries, #1 the way they ship them is not humane a all, no food no water and nailed in to crates, this is a horse not a dog or cat that can go in a cage. They are a big animal and need stalls, they need water and they need hay and they need to stand up not have their head bent over in a box. We the people have to stop this from happening.
