The U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee approved a bill that would block the funding for federal inspectors at horse slaughter facilities. If the bill becomes law, it would effectively prohibit horse slaughter facilities from operating in the United States.

According to an advisory from the American Horse Council, the bill provides funding for the U.S. Department of Agriculture from Oct. 1, 2015, through Sept. 30, 2016. Sen. Tom Udall (D-N.M.) offered an amendment to prohibit the funding for USDA inspections at U.S. horse slaughter facilities. A similar amendment was offered by U.S. Rep. Sam Farr (D-Calif.) when the House Appropriation Committee marked-up its version of the bill July 8. Farr’s amendment, however, was defeated in a 24-24 vote, according to the AHC.

Because the amendment is not in both the House and Senate versions of the bill, its inclusion in any final bill that is eventually passed will be determined during a Conference Committee that will reconcile the differences between the House and Senate versions of the bill, the AHC reported.

I know my House Reps House members Rep Daniel Lipinski and Rep. Michael Quigley are on board. It’s amazing that some of our Legislators support slaughter. I wonder if any of them have viewed the slaughter process. Unbelievable that they take the word of some of these people. We saw it in Illinois at the committee meetings. Statements made that were so inaccurate it made my blood boil. We are not talking about corn, soy beans or oats, but living horses and other equines. We need the numbers folks. Please call as Jerry stated. Japan Airlines flies the Belgium’s out of Canada to Japan. Caroline Kennedy is our Ambassador to Japan so I emailed her about them purchasing US horses. I don’t know if she was aware of this, but she is now. She of all people should know the difference between horses and livestock.. So share your thoughts with her too. We must get this legislation passed!

Sad but true, the facts that lead legislators to vote for horse slaughter comes not from a sense that they are doing the right thing, but from the knowledge that they received $2.500 to $5,000 in contributions from the meat/horse industry. Given a million dollars and a week on the hill and I can guarantee that horse slaughter would be banned forever – or until the pro-slaughter side wandered in with $1.2 million. Democracy at work.

horses have helped people for so many centuries! and after we took them from the wild– WE OWE THEM. decent people protect animals because they have a right to be here and they’re sentient too and people who hurt them so unnecessarily deserve ALL THE WORST CONSEQUENCES IN THE UNIVERSE. make the right choice please and be heroes to the animals!!! not accomplices to MURDER. thank you

While it is great the amendment was added to the Senate draft bill anything could still happen so make sure you call your legislators in support of the amendment. Ideally, we should attempt it to be added to the House bill during the debate albeit there are a number of things that may prevent that.

And remember to tell them to support the SAFE Act. We need to put a stop to the flow of horses going through the border
