Word is beginning to spread in the media. The Bureau of Land Management has gone beyond just being bad managers – they are abusing and destroying the very horses they are entrusted by the American people to protect. ~ HfH

The Bureau of Land Management has had an objectively bad year from a public relations standpoint. After a show of force at the Bundy Ranch in Nevada that sparked nationwide criticism, the federal agency was ridiculed by officials and citizens across the Southwest for its intrusion in local affairs.

Now it seems the Humane Society is taking a renewed look at the BLM’s policy of rounding up wild horses, an issue it has expressed concern about in the past.

Wayne Pacelle, the organization’s president and CEO, penned a blog entry this week lambasting the program, which recently resulted in the death of 10 horses. His criticism came on the heels of a Wyoming roundup involving about 800 wild horses, which he insists was conducted in an inhumane and irresponsible manner.

“The BLM’s records show that one yearling was found dead in a holding pen having suffered an acute neck injury,” he wrote, “a three-and-a-half-month old filly was found dead in a holding pen of unknown causes, and a six-month-old colt died in a horse trailer from pre-existing lung injuries that were exacerbated by the helicopter drive gather.”

And let us NOT forget that Joan Guilfoyle herself said last spring at the Sacramento Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board Meeting that BLM would not work with advocates who sue every week.

Just what are we suppose to do to get some relief? The legal system may be bogged down and it might be a nuisance but short of BLM listening to reason we have no other option.

How come 50 ranchers get to make federal law? I don’t recall my family being allowed to vote for them (and they live in WY). How come a Federal employee can invite a lawsuit against her own agency and still maintain her job? If I ever invited someone to sue a former boss of mine–I’d be out of work and totally humiliated.

It’s frustrating. And to hear Dave Phillips who helped to out Tom Davis has gone to the dark side all I can do is shake my head.

At least I got to see the Pryor horses this summer.
