“Habitat for Horses Receives $10,000 from the Bill and Barbara Mackey Foundation for Animal Welfare”
Hitchcock, Texas — Habitat for Horses today announced that the ASPCA Equine Fund recently offered a $10,000 grant to Habitat for Horses, if a donor(s) would match it, and already a $10,000 match has been received, generously given by the Bill and Barbara Mackey Foundation for Animal Welfare, administered through the Greater Houston Community Foundation.
In giving the match for the fencing, the Foundation stated “This grant is for expenses for starving horses in memory of Bill Mackey and all our wonderful Mackey Pets!”
“We recently purchased 10 acres to expand our intake facility,” explains Rebecca Williams, Executive Director of Habitat for Horses. “However, we needed to raise the funds to fence the newly purchased acreage. The ASPCA offered $10,000 toward the fencing cost, if the amount could be matched by our donors. We were thrilled when the Bill and Barbara Mackey Foundation for Animal Welfare immediately stepped forward with the $10,000 match for the fencing.”
The ASPCA grant was the third ASPCA grant offered in one and a half years to Habitat for Horses.
“The support of the ASPCA has been absolutely critical during that time frame,” says Williams. In 2015 alone, Habitat for Horses partnered with law enforcement to take in 99 abused horses, at great expense. More fenced pasture was needed to help even more horses this year, and in all the coming years.
“The ASPCA Equine Fund is proud to award life-saving grants and resources to nonprofit equine welfare organizations across the country,” said Jacque Schultz, senior director of the ASPCA Equine Fund. “This was a competitive grant process and we are so pleased to be able to announce that Habitat for Horses is one of the recipients of this unique opportunity that will help them increase their capacity to save even more horses.”
“Thanks to this wonderful ASPCA grant and generous match, all the horses in desperate need of our help will have a beautiful fenced pasture to heal in, right next to our intake area and onsite hospital,” states Williams. “It is a lovely and permanent tribute to Bill Mackey and the Mackey Pets, and a perfect way for them to be honored.”
The new 10 acres was purchased with the Greener Pastures Fund established at Habitat for Horses. The Fund is still being used to make payments for acreage, so please consider joining the ASPCA and the Bill and Barbara Mackey Foundation for Animal Welfare in donating to Habitat for Horses.
