Luck, Texas (November 4, 2006) - Twelve horses found a forever home in Luck,
Texas, today when Willie Nelson signed the final adoption contract with
Habitat for Horses. Surrounded by the media, Willie and Kinky Friedman
discussed the operation of the two horse slaughterhouses in Texas, a
destination Willie’s new horses faced had Habitat for Horses not stepped in
to retrieve them before they were taken to an auction.

These twelve horses came from the original herd of 301 horses, owned by Doug
Edwards, one of the founders of The American Paint Horse Association. Due do
the closing of his estate, the registered horses were to be auctioned, but
unknown to the estate, the auction was closed to the public and attended
only by “killer-buyers,” a group of people that buy horses for the horse
slaughterhouses operating in Texas and Illinois.

This small group escaped that auction, but were once again facing that final
destination when Habitat for Horses, a national equine protection
organization based in Texas, obtained the funds to purchase them. Through an
all-volunteer effort, the horses were moved to a foster home in Austin, then
transferred to Willie Nelson’s ranch in October.

During the press conference, Willie Nelson discussed how horse slaughter
should come to a complete end in the United States. Kinky Friedman said
that, were he to ever become Governor, his top priority would be to see that
both the horse slaughterhouses in Texas are immediately closed.

"When I grew up, I didn't want to eat my horse," Nelson said. "I didn't know
people ate their horses."

"All this horse meat is going to France. This is ridiculous," Friedman said,
saying the industry "has no business being in Texas."

Willie Nelson issued this statement about Habitat for Horses:

I just adopted 12 horses from Habitat for Horses. As of this morning, they
share the land with me at our ranch in Luck, TX.

Today there are 270 horses up for adoption through this great organization
that goes to great lengths to save horses. As you are aware, there is a bill
on its way to the Senate that will ban the slaughter of American horses for
human consumption. Until it passes, many lives are in grave danger. If you
have ever wanted to adopt a horse, now is the time. If you ever wanted to
contribute to a great cause, Habitat for Horses sure fits the bill.

Please contact your Senators and ask them to co-sponsor The American Horse
Slaughter Prevention Act (S. 1915). For more info on the bill, go to
http:/www.saplonline.org.

Thanks,
Willie Nelson
