Habitat for Horses, with assistance from the Hunt Count Sheriff’s Dept, HSUS, North Texas Humane Society, East Texas Horse Rescue and numerous volunteers successfully removed and obtained custody of over 70 horses in Northeast Texas.

Seventy-five horses were removed from the property of a Cash, TX horse breeder on June 26, 2007. Swift action was taken in the removal of the horses due to the owner’s past history of relocating the herd when concerns arose regarding its deteriorating overall condition. HfH investigation, execution of a warrant for seizure, and the organization and removal of all equines was completed within 24 hours.

The owner and one accessory were charged with 5 counts of animal cruelty and arrested. They were released on bond and a court hearing was scheduled to determine the custody of the  equines. However; after further documentation and assessment of the condition of the horses, 5 more counts of animal cruelty were charged and the defendants  opted for a

plea bargain consisting of agreement to surrender all of the horses to HfH, jail time, probation including a restriction to owning or caring for any equines, and restitution for care of the herd, as well as provisions to insure the health and well being of the couples non-equine animals.

The horses will now be distributed to foster homes, rehabilitated and placed up for adoption. Seventy-three equines are now seeking placement in loving homes. Two mares were humanly euthanized post-seizure due to extensive complications stemming from malnourishment. The size of the herd will also grow over the next several months, as a large percentage of it consists of expectant mares.

HfH will be making available further photos and information on the individual horses in need.

An Image of Neglect.

"A horse has no future. It cannot greet the
sun and say today will be better. It can only
reflect upon days of past experiences. It is our job to create a positive past."
