Weekend in the Panhandle -
Part 2
Volunteers talk about the
assistance they gave
Volunteer Paula J.: I arrived on
Friday afternoon with about 50 or so
bales of hay. |

I got to meet Mr. Sherrard
and Mr. Berchfeild. Both,
incredible men with hearts as
open as the vast landscape they
live in, and pride as large as
the open range that had burnt.
Everyone wanted to help the
other person first. "Yea, I need
some hay, but let everyone else
get what they need first and I
will get what is left" was heard
over and over.
These five horses - what can I tell
you. By Saturday they knew who the
volunteers were. They had light in their
eyes, probably for the first time in
two weeks. You could see the pain,
you could feel the hurt, you could
feel your own heart breaking with
every charred part of their body
showing you the trauma they endured.
But SPIRIT! I have never experience
SPIRIT like I experienced SPIRIT of
these 5 horses. No one horse was
allowed to grieve, give up, quit,
feel sorry for itself, or allowed to
not believe he/she would be whole
again. Like the people out in this
land, these horses bonded together,
are holding each other up, and
refusing to let this beat them!
I have to say, on a lighter note,
that the green slimy chunks that
came out of the hoses when siphoning
the water through were also an
experience I will never forget. Not
to mention the funk that dwelled at
the bottom of that tank - which is
now a permanent attachment to my
shoes! One thing my fellow
volunteers on Saturday have to admit
- I will go the extra mile for the
horses, even if it means sucking
green scum from a water tank, or
taking a bet (and winning) that I
could lift a bag of chafe hay over
my head! Thank you, Charlotte, Val
for making me laugh until I cried.
Thank you for all that you do!
Rebecca and her family deserve a
medal for their caring, their work
and their dedication. Pray for the
ranchers, pray for the people, and
please pray for the horses.
