Weekend in the Panhandle - Part 1
Volunteers and Deliveries

Volunteer Brenda F.: It was easy not to forget about Hurricane Katrina and Rita with all the news coverage, but this disaster does not have it.

There are five horses there in our care that need daily treatments - hydro therapy, cutting away dead, burned skin, ointment applied to burns, hands to pet and soothe. In addition to this, many of the people who have horses up there are trying to take care of them themselves and they need daily visits for assistance, medical supplies, encouragement.

Here volunteers are doing hydrotherapy on one of the injured horses.

On this horse, you can see exactly how high the fire was it had to run through. The legs have been treated and are medicated to heal the burns.

Many horses' hair is completely cinched and manes and tails are like glued together.

This gelding's genital area is completely burnt. Many mares were also burnt the same way and their foals cause them a lot of pain when needing to suckle for milk. For that reason, we are in desperate need to provide milk replacement to the mares.

Feeding time requires medicating as well.

A badly needed delivery of alfalfa hay from Kansas finally arrived.

Many ranchers and farmers pulled up to pick up badly needed feed for their animals.
