Twenty-six pairs of eyes peered out between metal bars. Twenty-six pairs
of eyes all telling the same story in such a different way. Some sad,
some angry, some content to only contemplate the promises the future now
held. A range of emotions matched only in the eyes peering back at them. |

Twenty-six pairs of eyes joined the Habitat for Horses family this
morning, all belonging to a herd of Arabians seized by the Galveston
County Sheriff’s Department last week. The seizure proved a unique
challenge. A herd of twenty-six including seventeen well-bred yet
unpredictable Arabian stallions. All a potential danger, to each other,
to the rest of the herd and even to experienced volunteers. The
requirements needed to safely house the peculiar make up of the herd
provided a unique challenge for Habitat for Horses and a unique
experience for the local community. In a deviation from the norm, the
herd was held within public view at the Galveston County Riding Arena
and Sherriff's Impound Yard in Santa Fe. Onlookers peered in with sadness at
the sheer number of beautiful heads still head high even though ribs
were showing through, with anger and disgust at the severely emaciated
stallions and yearling filly so tiny and frail, but always with an
understanding that the worst was past and that wrongs would soon be
righted. The stallions will be immediately gelded as part of their
rehabilitative process.
Twenty-six pairs of eyes have
joined all those already peering out from the fences of Habitat for
Horses. Looking for hope and promise in a new life and a new home.
Watching the emotions of all those peering in. Please consider adopting
an equine from Habitat for Horses. You will find all ages, breeds and
levels of training in our herd. Visit our
