Sacramento horse carriagesProtesters with working animal advocates demonstrated concern Sunday for working horses in Old Sacramento.

The group paid for a controversial advertisement this week in Sacramento News & Review hoping to raise awareness.

“We understand what the city is trying to do but this is not nostalgic anymore… The pollution and the busy streets… our goal is for this ad to lead to a change in city code,” a spokesperson for the group told FOX40 Sunday. “We want horse and carriages banned on Old Sac. An urban environment isn’t a place for horses.”

However, Crystal Newborn, whose family owns Top Hand Ranch and nearly 16 horses who work in Old Sac, says the horses, like humans, need something to do.
