Imprinting Interaction, or imprinting, between a human and a foal within the first two hours of birth, if done properly, can make a big difference in our ability to handle and train a horse.
The imprinting technique should never be attempted unless the person knows exactly what to do, but by reading and asking trainers knowledgeable in the technique and acting shortly after birth, imprinting makes the horse/human relationship much tighter and more conducive to future training.
The goals of the process are: • Building a closer bond with humans • Training the foal be unafraid of being touched by hands and objects • Letting the foal know about comfort in the hands of humans • Teaching respect for humans
During the imprinting process, the foal is touched and stroked all over by the human until all resistance is removed. Of course, it's important to have a mare that respects humans, for they can be very protective of their new baby.
