Horsemeat Taste like Chicken?

Food Safety News BY NEWS DESK |

Chicken nuggets and other meat products have been recalled by Greek health authorities after being found to contain horsemeat, the UK’s Meat Trades Journal reported Monday.

The Hellenic Food Safety Authority (EFET) said in a statement that the fraud was discovered via laboratory testing, but so far the first eight results for phenylbutazone, a drug commonly administered to horses that is harmful to humans, have all been negative.

Horse DNA was detected at various levels in a variety of products, including soutsouki (more than 25 percent horsemeat), chicken nuggets (between 10 and 25 percent), pre cooked frozen burgers (more than 50 percent) and frankfurter sausage (between 10 and 25 percent).

See for a full list of recently recalled products.

The recall became widely known on Monday, just as an editorial by Bloomberg News on how the recent horsemeat scandals are an example of the weaknesses in the global food chain was being circulated.

“The horse-meat storm that broke over Europe two months ago has been in one respect a tempest in a horseshoe, because it posed no threat to human health,” read the editorial. “That’s not a minor caveat in an industry where, in the United States alone, tainted food kills 3,000 people each year and sickens 48 million. The horse-meat substitution has struck a nerve, however, as people wonder what else they’re eating that isn’t what they think it is.”

I think we teh public has the right to know what we are eating, & how much is put in the different things we eat, Why would some one hide it in teh first place….shows that we ar left in the dark, the government is not doing the job it should be doing, horses are not food, not raised for food, they are pets and work companions, sports & hobby. turne the horses loose and stop playing the games.

Yes I agree the public needs to know what they are eating ie, babies, pregnant women, religeous orders, etc. I have not seen any studies regarding sick/diseased horses entering the food supply. Who would want to eat horse meat from diseased horses? Also no testing for chemicals from wormers, vaccinations, etc. Money, money, corruption, on and on…the horses pay the ultimate price DEATH! If their meat is found to have bute it is thrown away, they died for nothing. Why are they not testing the horses before they are slaughtered? Doesn’t make sense…

  • I agree with Daryl, the Dollar rules and it is disgusting to think that. Where are our morals, to eat a horse who have been our companions through thick and thin, gone to war with us, got killed with us and why do we treat them this way, the almighty dollar that’s why.

Another reason to not eat meat at all. It’s not really that hard of a change. There are alternative meat-less products out there that are actually really good as well as good for you. And there are more great meat-less products on the market all the time as more and more of us have quit eating meat.

And, by the way, what country in the world is going to buy the tainted meat of American horses? Really… is there still a market at all for American Horse meat?

America is really staring to resemble that fairly new hit series, The Walking Dead”. We have become a nation of mindless zombies, eating anything in sight! And the really sick, sad thing about it all is the fact that these horse-eating hungry zombies are completely ignoring the facts, the truths, & the very real, very serious health & food safety issues. They just keep looking the other way, & say people like us are “trying to get them to change their dietary preferences”! What a crock of you know what! I don’t give a crap what they want to eat, but in THIS country, we don’t eat horses, we don’t raise or regulate them as such, & I DO care what MY family eats!
