Horse Slaughter Plant to Open January 1st, 2014

Valley Meat Plant

With a terrible history of repeatedly violating safety and environmental laws, New Mexico’s Valley Meat will now be slaughtering horses on January 1st. We can only hope New Mexico’s Attorney General Gary King’s lawsuit will stop this in time. ~ HfH

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — New Mexico’s top prosecutor filed a lawsuit Thursday in state district court in an attempt to block a planned horse slaughter plant from opening in less than two weeks.

The move by Attorney General Gary King comes after a federal appeals court rolled back a court order that had kept Valley Meat Co. from starting operations earlier this fall. Owner Rick De Los Santos has been making plans to open Jan. 1, and his attorney said Thursday that those plans haven’t changed.Attorney Blair Dunn called King’s lawsuit frivolous and a waste of taxpayer money. Under state law, if a judge issues a restraining order or preliminary injunction, a security bond would have to be posted by the state while the legal challenge winds its way through the court. Dunn said that could cost New Mexico as much as $435,000 a month.

“As a New Mexican, as a taxpayer, I’m beyond offended and I think it’s almost criminal what they’re doing. They’re wasting everybody’s money,” Dunn said.

King defended the lawsuit, saying Valley Meat stands to violate state laws related to food safety, water quality and unfair business practices.

“I believe that the operation of this plant in New Mexico is antithetical to the way we do business in New Mexico,” King said. “We don’t eat horses in New Mexico, and we think this is an inappropriate use of this plant.”

Valley Meat and proposed plants in Missouri and Iowa have been the targets of animal protection groups trying to block the slaughtering of horses.

We frequently travel in the west. Have told my husband not one PENNY of our travel $$ will go to states with slaughter plants in operation, and I plan to tell their tourism boards too! BOYCOTT NM.

Bravo! I hope everyone will follow your lead. Any state that considers opening a horse slaughter plant should expect a boycott from horse lovers who travel. New Mexico depends greatly on tourism and had better take this into account.
Any state that would allow horse slaughter should be prepared to have a shameful reputation. Our country was built on the backs of horses and we should forever respect and protect them.

Thank you AG King. It is about time someone stepped up in NM to do the right thing. Valley meats doesn’t appear to care about the environment, the food chain, or basic humane issues. It appears from their past and present actions that the only thing that motivates them is money. Thank YOU Mr. King. I hope you are the next governor of New Mexico!

This case reflects the kind of power that the international business community will have if the TPP goes through. One of the main tenets of that trade agreement is that companies can sue governments and require compensation and penalties if the governments interrupt their flow of profits, EVEN IF THEY ARE DOING SOMETHING ILLEGAL.

It is outrageous for the judge to require a bond to be posted by the STATE when the state representative is trying to prevent a business from opening whose modus operandi is “to violate state laws related to food safety, water quality and unfair business practices”, as AG King says.

As a former resident of this great state I am appauled that a practice the majority of Americans considers barbaric and inappropriate since we do not consume horse meat in this counrty, would be allowed to resurface. We have dumped thousands of horses into this market by removing them from open ranges where they compete with cattle grazinf leases….their only crime! All for the sake of greed…individuals who see a world market and large cash flow.

Roswell Chamber of Commerce, keep at them folks, I’m sure they don’t want the house of horrors to open. This is a response I received a few months ago.

Dear Lin, Thank you so much for bringing this to our attention. You couldn’t have done it at a better time. Our Executive Director of the Roswell Chamber of Commerce along with ten other officials from the city & county of Roswell will be going to Washington DC next week. This horrific matter will not be taken lightly and we will do everything we can to keep this from coming not only in our city but our state as well.

    Thank you again,
