Bureau of Land Management officials are hoping wild horses take the bait in this year’s partial gather in the Book Cliffs north of Grand Junction.

At a public hearing Tuesday night seeking comment on the BLM’s preliminary environmental assessment for the wild horse gather, officials laid out their initial plans to gather up to 50 wild horses and comply with the BLM’s Appropriate Management Level of 90 to 150 horses for the Little Book Cliffs Wild Horse Range. Currently, the herd has about 155 horses, according to the BLM.

“We are trying to manage these horses in the most humane way possible,” said Jerome Fox, the BLM’s Northwest Colorado District wild horse and burro specialist, addressing the hearing’s two dozen attendees.

Last week, BLM officials selected five sites onto which baited traps will be placed. Jim Dollarschell, a BLM range specialist, said tentative plans call for first baiting the traps with salt or mineral blocks, though alfalfa and hay also are being considered. Then, water will be used as bait.

“There’s a high chance of getting the numbers we’ll need by bait trapping,” Fox said. BLM officials have the option of using motorized vehicles or helicopters in the gathering, and Tuesday’s meeting doubled as an annual statewide hearing to address the use of motorized vehicles and helicopters in land and wildlife management.

Toni Moore, special projects coordinator for the Cloud Foundation, expressed concern that the meeting’s double purpose as a statewide hearing hadn’t been made clear.

Dollarschell said that once the determined number of horses are trapped, they’ll be brought to the Mesa County Sheriff’s Posse grounds and readied for adoption. CONTINUED… Read more and comment at the Daily Sentinel

Would like to know what Jerome fox s and the BLM s definition of humane is ?????Also wonder why the BLM deem it necessary to round up 50 mustangs when there only is 155???? I think its time for them to dummy up !!!!!!!

It is time for them to stop this rounding up of more horses and not enough room to keep them, no shelters for them, these animals have a better chance in the wild to make it or not at least it is natures way to thin them out.

Dear Daryl, as we all know , that the more Mustangs the BLM removes and does something to them to stop them from reproducing , nature wants balance and she will force the Mustangs to have more foals, the BLM has upset natures plan, and nature is not happy, the must return our Mustangs to the wild , they are the important part of the Grand Scheme Nature has , the BLM must return the Mustangs to the Land they were born to inhabit !!!!!!!!!!

really 50 and how many already in captivity something smelly in the white house BLM needs to stick to land and leave the animals to the human society !!!!!

    July 12, 2013
  • Using bait traps is definitely better than crashing into them with helicopters. Even the smallest effort on their parts to be humane should be applauded. We’ve asked for bait trapping. This is a good thing. A better thing would be leaving them alone.

Time for Andrew Cohen to do another story on the ruination of the west and rampaging of our wild horses, burros and wolves, by corporate shill Obama.

What happened to what was said from the investigation that was done on the BLM round ups about a month ago stating that BLM was wrong!!!!! So the bottom line is that “BLM & the “gov” are one in the same & it’s all about money & control so it’s never gonna stop because if they didn’t have to stop by the investigation from all the scientific & nature organizations of I can’t recall the names at the moment stateing they were wrong oh im sick to my stomach im done this is all bs!!!!

I don’t understand the need to round up 50+ horses when there is only 150 of them in this area.
    This is overboard and ridiculous!!!

The BLM is out of control with their direction in whole process of handling our Wild Horses. The National Academy of Sciences report clearly states this isn’t working. The roundups are unnecessary and it’s time to update this program and get with the science and facts.
It’s not working, it’s never worked and it’s inhumane to continue.

A handful of quotes that come to mind regarding the BLM’s pretense of managing — which is no more than perpetually oppressing the wild horses and burros:

“Was there ever any domination that did not appear natural to those who possessed it?” ~ John Stuart Mill

“When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know Peace.” ~ Jimi Hendrix

“Crime is contagious. If the government becomes a lawbreaker, it breeds contempt for the law, it invites every man to come a law unto himself. It invites anarchy.” ~ U.S. Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis

“I have a dream that one day, the treatment of individuals will not be determined by the species to which they belong, but by the merits of the qualities they possess.” ~ May Shooster, volunteer, Nonhuman Rights Project

“It does not require a majority to prevail, but rather an irate, tireless minority keen to set brush fires in people’s minds.” ~ Samuel Adams

Dear BlessusAll, Thank You for those quotes, everyone one of them apply and are true !!!!!!!!!

Upon a second reading of the quotes, I see that they are indeed true, Arlene. The only thing I would fix, if I could go back and edit it, is my misspelling of the Nonhuman Rights Project volunteer’s name: it is Jay Shooster! Sorry ’bout that! 🙂

Thank you Daryl, I know your right, as long as Im alive i will never give up, Im not a quiter, but i guess im just tired & upset because i live with the wild horses & they come to my house in fact i have a salt block & a stock of carrots for them & I have even been face to face with them & they don’t do anything to scare me & I know they are wild so to be careful not to move fast or alot & they aren’t afraid of me, I think they call me “the carrot lady on the mtn.” but i cry everyday & when i hear helicopters i run outside to see where they are & if possible i head that way to make a fool of myself trying to make them go away. What kills me is that I get to look in there eyes & to see the curiosity & love & life they are the most beautiful creatures & the babies are so .. there eyes & face with there ears up to see what is happening & I know what is in store for them I feel so helpless I feel like they are in the sharks den & I can’t do anything to protect them. It’s hard to live with that especially since i live in the “good ol boys” community police firemen I think they are all in with blm attitude. On my deck looking out at my area I saw a horse young horse get shot in the butt running away from this man & he shot three times until it couldn’t get up & the guy that was with the shooter is one of my neighbors about about 3 football fields away don’t know them i keep to myself but they cleaned it up very fast & i did make phone calls did not call the police i had nothing to give them but i called agriculture & blm & they said i was lieing! so I will never forget it can’t sleep without nightmares. It’s made me want to get alot of money & by at least 40 acres just for the Mustangs. sorry so long I am very passionate about this. Nancy from Nevada

NANCY I am so sorry, it kills me to sit here and see what is on the computer and It has to tear you up to see it in person. I have 5 horses and 4 of them I bought to save in some way or get them away from the owner who was not taken care of them or abusing them. I think they are the most beautiful of animals God put on this earth. I have healed them for me and my family and friends but if some one got them and abused them again they would fight back they do not for get. When you are fighting the government people who work for them it is a up hill battle. These animals have the right to live their on land that was put aside for them & it makes no difference to any one who is going after them or what they do to them, it makes me sick I my heart. I will pray for you, it has to be worse for you with them in your back yard. One day may be we can get help for them.

I feel so for you, Nancy. And I admire your courage and refusal to settle for anything less than truth and justice.

It’s not just the horses and burros who are haunted by the helicopters; the humans who love and respect these beautiful creatures are being purposely, systematically terrorized, too.

Please know that you are making a difference to the horses who feel safe near your house. Even if they are afraid of every other human on earth, they clearly recognize and appreciate your affection for them, and they trust you. I’m grateful for your presence in their lives, and for the tenderness with which you hold them in your merciful heart.

You’re the sane one, Nancy. Sadly, the powers-that-be (or that pretend to be) are suffering from a severe case of insanity.

To remain sane myself, I have to believe that “this, too, shall pass.”

Those of us who are on the side of Life (not “managing” one another to extinction), of Truth (not lies and deception), and of Love (not hatred and fear) are sane. Together, we can lead our country back to sanity. Together, we can close our corral gates on corruption and open them wide to goodness. And not only “can,” but “must.” 🙂

Daryl, Hi thank you for your prayers. We need to really ban together & do more Im wondering if Jerry Finch has an idea brewing up? I know there was talk of organizing a trip to washington dc to protest at they’re door & that might be all we have left to do this is “BLM” that obviously has more power of the horses then our President has. So realality is they will win or slither a way to keep a hold on them (horses) but to slow them down for a while would be great! Even after the findings of there actions to be wrong!, they still didn’t have to stop there are still round ups i see which horses disappear after i here a helicopter i cry but my tears are worthless i have to do something more so if you have any ideas please let me know i have even looked up the cheapest flight to DC keeping in a file until i hear a go so we need more commited people i mean totally dedicated! You can talk to any body anywhere & they are all against what is happening but when you walk away they don’t think about it again I need to make people hear this to where it doesn’t stop, what i mean is i want to chant it so it never stops if you will. Do you catch what im trying to say i need this to be imprinted in daily lifes mind to where they have to something about it!!!!!!
