BLM Seeks Research Proposals to Develop New, Innovative Techniques to Suppress Population Growth of Wild Horse and Burro Herds

wild horses wyoming(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – As part of its continuing efforts to improve the national Wild Horse and Burro Program, and in response to a recent study of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), the Bureau of Land Management is seeking research proposals to develop new or improve existing ways of controlling the population growth of wild horses and burros that roam public lands in the West.

“We remain committed to making substantial improvements to the national Wild Horse and Burro Program and we know that some of the best ideas for effective contraception techniques will come from veterinarians, scientists, universities, pharmaceutical companies, and other researchers outside of the BLM,” said Joan Guilfoyle, Division Chief of the program. “The development and use of more effective methods to reduce population growth rates will lessen the need to remove animals from the range and improve the health of public rangelands, conserve wildlife habitat, and save taxpayers money.”

The BLM has issued a Request for Applications (RFA) to alert veterinarians, scientists, universities, pharmaceutical companies, and other researchers of the BLM’s need to develop new, innovative techniques and protocols for implementing population growth-suppression methods. Specifically, the BLM is interested in finding experts to develop new or refine current techniques and protocols for either contraception or the spaying/neutering of on-range male and female wild horses and burros. The methods may be surgical, chemical, pharmaceutical, or mechanical (such as intrauterine devices). The submission deadline for applications is May 7, 2014.

The President’s proposed budget for Fiscal Year 2015 includes $80.2 million for the BLM’s Wild Horse and Burro Program, a $2.8 million increase over the FY 2014 level. The additional funds will focus on research of population-control methods.

The BLM estimates that 40,605 wild horses and burros (about 33,780 horses and 6,825 burros) are roaming BLM-managed rangelands in 10 Western states, based on the latest data available, compiled as of February 28, 2013. Wild horses and burros have virtually no natural predators and their herd sizes can double about every four years, as confirmed by the recent NAS study that urged the BLM to make wider use of fertility control and found that, on average, the BLM undercounts the Westwide population of wild horses and burros by 20 to 30 percent.

This Agency is so transparent in their goal to complete their planned Genocide of the Wild Horses and Burros. That is the ONLY thing they allow themselves to be transparent on.

Let’s have a count from someone that is not part of the Government, but someone who understands Wild Animals, do a count of exactly how many Wild Horses and Burros are in Long Term Holding. I suggest Jack Hanna of the Columbus Zoo.

When we get that count we will know how many have been sent to slaughter in Mexico. We can get some of that info from the Export Reports but we have known for years that not all Wild Horses and Burros have been included.

Once we know how many we have in long term holding and an estimate of how many are still on the Public Lands, we can discuss this ‘Overpopulation’ problem.

It is a HUGE Land Grab for Cattle that graze down to the dirt. It takes TEN YEARS to reclaim pasture that has been grazed on by cattle. Cattle have always been the problem. That is an unnecessary statement at best!

He is the only person who is qualified and honest enough to do this. Spaying Mares on the Range was something they experimented with but the Mares they spayed died. Who does this procedure outdoors where nothing is sterile? You cannot make the ‘Surgical Field sterile when you are performing an invasive surgery outside!

We can have Ginger or Craig call him, Craig may be better since he once worked for the BLM and knows how awful they truly are.

        • Please Craig call him !!!!!!!!!! We cannot have surgeries performed where it isnt sterile and most of all because it is not NEEDED and certainly not necessary !!!! Geeze somebody stop these frigen idoits, without any souls. Monsters !!!!!!

I will email Craig. His credentials are impeccable and he has been fighting this for years. He knew Thelma Johnston and that is how long he has been aware of the treatment of the Wild Horses and Burros. They used to run them off cliffs and they would die that way.

They have a long history of abusing these animals. Problem is that the heads of these Agencies are all from the Western States and are, or have in their families, Cattle Ranchers.

            Craig’s email is:

            ccdowner@yahoo.com

I will email him as well.

I don’t know how about sterilizing the 50,000 you have in holding pens and setting them free…That should cut down on the number of foals born each year… Better yet how about charging the cattle and sheep ranchers double for the use of public land.. or a least what the average American person would have to pay for least land..If not push them off pubic land and leave the Wild horses alone.

  • Ask the BLM to prove first it is needed !!!!!

I emailed Craig and will hear from him soon. He is so qualified for this as he has PHD’s from Berkely in California. He is known around the world as a Wildlife Ecologist. You will never meet a nicer guy either.

Thanks Arlene, I just have to figure out the expenses for travel and lodging. Craig has to tell me when he is able to do this. He is traveling right now and wants to do this. He worked for the BLM many years ago and he knew Thelma Johnston personally. He will not rest until there is Justice for these Wild Horses and Burros!!! Neither will we!!!!!

I have had an email from Craig and together we are going to determine the Timeline for the trip and that will help us calculate expenses for him. After we do that we will get in touch with Jack Hanna. I am sickened by the Wild Horses that were sent to Canada for slaughter.
