Temperament: Thelma needs time to bond with people.

Physical problems / health issues: Hard keeper – even with free access to grass, feed and supplements, it is hard to keep weight on her. She has large hairless spots from burns or trauma on both hips but the hair may be re-growing.

Interaction with horses: Thelma gets along well with the 2 other mares and 3 geldings.

Interaction with people: Thelma is okay around people – no major battles, but she will not be a “pocket horse”.

History:  Thelma was adopted by a wonderful older couple but they fell on hard times and could no longer keep her and relinquished her back to HFH.

Training / abilities: Thelma is well broke to ride She has an awkward gait and stumbles occasionally. She can be barn sour. She doesn’t bolt but doesn’t go where you tell her to go. She has a mind of her own. She’ll need an experienced rider who won’t allow her to get her way.  Would make a great lead-line or therapy horse.

Experience level required to work with this horse: Experienced. No children. Thelma is an older mare and knows tricks to get her way. Her foster mom reports that she is a rough ride possibly due to her conformation.

Has this horse ever:  Bucked? No. Reared? No. Kicked? No. Bitten? No. Other?

Ground handling: Catch? Yes, especially with feed. Lead? Yes. Tie? Yes. Trailer? Yes. Clip? Trim Feet? Yes. Bathe? Yes.

Special needs: Her foster mom is concerned about Thelma’s stumbling. Her former owner tried weighted shoes which didn’t help. She seems to do better barefooted. The vet has checked her legs and feet. He thinks it is a conformation problem. Thelma also slobbers a lot into her feed bucket. This is not a dental problem. The vet thinks it may be a nervous reaction and may be why she does not put weight on. She shivers when cold and wet so her foster mom puts her in a stall. Thelma acts like she has been kept in a stall a lot.

Other comments: Thelma has had a hard life and would benefit from a loving forever home.
