Temperament: Tehya is super sweet and calm. She listens to your voice and tries her hardest to do whatever you want her to. She cannot see so is very ‘in tune’ with where her humans are. She is very careful not to run into you as long as you let her know you are there. If you forget and she bumps you, she stops and sniffs you as if to check and see if you are ok.

Physical problems / health issues: Tehya is blind at this time.  Due to her young age the option of fixing her eyes surgically was explored.  Unfortunately, after examination and ultrasound at A&M the veterinarians told us she was not fixable and would be permanently blind.  Tehya also has an old injury to her left hind leg that was not treated properly so she had a large amount of proud flesh on it.  This has been successfully treated and though she has a large area of scar tissue, the proud flesh is gone and she appears sound.

Interaction with horses: Tehya would like to be with other horses but is in a pen by herself as her current foster home does not have a safe pasture for a blind horse.  With the proper fencing and a guide horse she would most likely be fine in a larger area.

Interaction with people:Very careful and tolerant.  This mare’s sweetness has endeared her to everyone she has met.  She loves people and is amazingly trusting when you lead her.  If her footing is going to change all you have to do is say “step step” after you tug lightly on the leadrope.  She slows and feels what the change is going to be.  Then you simply tell her to come on or back up.

History: Tehya was left at someone’s house while the people were away.  She was tied up and abandoned.  The people came home that evening to find a blind, horribly injured, and starved horse tied up in their yard.

Training / abilities: Tehya is halter broke and very easy to handle.

Experience level required to work with this horse: Beginner, though you need to remember her lack of sight and handle her accordingly

Has this horse ever:  Bucked? No. Reared? No. Kicked? No. Bitten? No. Other?

Ground handling: Catch? Yes. Lead? Yes, handler must take care where she is led because of her blindness. Tie? Yes. Trailer? Yes. Clip? Unknown. Trim Feet? Yes. Bathe? Yes.

Special needs: Tehya has finally gained all her weight back and is healthy and happy.  She needs fencing appropriate for a blind horse and a quiet companion she can hang out with.  She does well if her companion wears a bell so she can keep track of them.

Other comments: “Tehya” is American Indian for “Precious”.  Once you meet this mare you will understand how she got that name.  She is indeed “Precious” and has a heart of gold.
