Sweet Pea
is a sorrel mare in her
twenties who was donated
to HfH. She has a severe
deformity to her spine.
We don't know exactly
what happened to her to
cause this, but the Vet
thinks that at some
point she suffered a
neck injury that went
untreated. As a result
the muscles on either
side of her spine
atrophied so there is
nothing to hold up her
spine and keep it
straight. She is being
watched closely for
signs of pain but so far
she is doing really
well.
Sweet Pea came from
the ranch where she was
very well cared for but
didn't have much of a
horse's life. Because of
her back she was kept in
a round pen for her own
safety. Now, with her
new Sanctuary home, she
has the run of the ranch
and has found herself a
useful job.
On March 29, 2007 a
miniature mare foaled
and Sweet Pea has taken
it upon herself to
become his baby sitter.
Since the day Tillicum
was born she has never
been far from his side -
well, she does take a
couple hours off each
week but she is very
dedicated. She gets very
anxious if she can't see
him and you will even
see Sweet Pea and
Tillicum off grazing
while Mom Belle takes a
nap. After her meals she
comes out of her stall
and waits for Tillicum
to come out of his. She
stands over him and has
even been seen licking
him to clean him up.
Sweet Pea is very
appropriately named as
she is probably the
sweetest horse at her
new home!
