Pete
Breed: Quarter Horse
DOB: 1998
Skill: None. Rescued

The most perfect horse at the ranch, Pete is the boss's son and the "King of All He Sees," especially when there is a cookie involved. He's pure QH, without any morals, manners or basic redeeming qualities, falls in love with a different mare several times a day. While he's been under saddle, he doesn't go anywhere because, "I don't have to do anything."

Pete was the first resident here at Habitat for Horses, spent a year in a stall healing from a fight with a barbed wire fence and a year wandering around the ICU pasture trying to understand those other four-legged creatures. He’s just a little bit spoiled because, in my eyes, he can do no wrong. Most volunteers disagree, which is why on any given afternoon you can hear complaints about his adventurous activities. “Pete’s standing in the water trough!” “Pete’s on top of the round bale!”

“That horse tried to kill me!”
Pete almost severed his front legs at the chest when he spooked and tried to run through a barbed wire fence. There were times during the year in his stall that he literally gave up, and I pulled every trick I could think of to get him going again. During the first four months he couldn’t stand up by himself if he lay down. My assistance turned into wrestling matches, which eventually became a game that he let me win. When he was a colt, and a weak, injured colt at that, the challenge was no big deal. Now that he’s 1,000 pounds and extremely healthy, winning is no longer a sure thing. He needs training, he needs to be taught ground manners and “Dad” is the only one that can do it.
