Durango
Breed:
Thoroughbred -
registered with Jocky
Club Sex:
Gelding DOB:
1990 Weight: Height: 16.3 hh
Color: Bay
Markings: Star
Location:
Dodd City, TX
Adoption Fee:
$100
Temperament:
Once Durango
settled in and
established that he is
the leader, he has been
mostly quiet, with some
definite spirit that
emerges from time to
time. He is very
loving.
Physical problems /
health issues:
none known at
this time, see his
history note about past
lameness issues
Interaction with horses:
Durango is top of
the herd, even with
horses his size and
bigger, herds “his” two
mares, and gets
possessive when other
geldings want their
attention, but is also
very gentle with the
weanling that we have in
our pasture, and gets
along very well with our
miniature horse and
hackney pony.
Interaction with people:
Durango is in the
midst of a refresher
course on polite ground
manners, but he loves
attention and seems to
truly want to please his
handlers
History:
Donated by his
previous owner, Durango
was raced in his younger
years and then purchased
to be a hunter/jumper,
but continually came up
lame when they attempted
to jump him. He was
then used mostly as a
trail horse with some
light arena work. His
past injuries to stifle
and ankle has apparently
left him as a companion
for the last couple of
years, but after having
his needed rest and
recuperation time,
lameness issues have not
yet resurfaced as of
February 2008 and has
begun to be lightly
ridden and is doing very
well under saddle.
Training / abilities:
Race training,
trail riding, light
arena work. He is a
smooth ride, has a light
mouth with experienced
hands, and needs only
light leg aides. After
having been a companion
only for so long, it
just comes with the
territory to have to go
through refresher
courses on just about
everything.
Experience level
required to work with
this horse:
advanced beginner
to intermediate, as he
can get quite bossy, and
tries to take control
with new riders.
Has this horse ever:
Bucked?
Yes, apparently in his
past he has. We can see
how sometimes he can be
very fresh when you
first start working him,
is best to work him
first in round pen or
lunge him before arena
work and definitely
before going out into
open fields especially
on nice crisp, cool
days, but he has not
bucked at our foster
home. Reared?
Apparently, he had
a moment of excitement
when other horses came
into view on a trail
ride, and has pulled
back into a rear when
being loaded into a
trailer. Kicked?
Yes, in the past he has
kicked out at the
farrier, and is in
process of re-training.
Bitten?
Apparently, he has
attempted to bite
sometime in
his past, but
has not attempted
to do so at his current
foster home, so
hopefully that was not
something that ever
became a habit. He is
around little children
and older ones as well
as inexperienced hands
that has offered him
treats and has not even
bitten on accident.
Other?
Ground handling:
once he
understands that he is
NOT the boss, he is
quite easy going and a
pleasure to be around
Catch? Yes Lead?
Yes Tie? Yes
Trailer? Yes,
loads in a 4 horse combo
trailer, but does not
like two-horse trailers
(he is 16.3 hands after
all) Clip? not
yet attempted Trim
Feet? Yes, but has
kicked out at a past
farrier, and is in
training Bathe?
not yet attempted
Special needs:
none known at
