Temperament:
Araglin is a very nice
mare who has an easy
handle on the ground.
She's easy to catch, is
"talkative" to her
foster mom and
friendly. She can get a
bit nervous around small
children, she has not
had much exposure to
them, but we anticipate
that with some time, she
would get used to this.
She really does have the
potential to be a
bomb-proof type of horse
with more work.
Physical problems /
health issues:
Melanoma removed from
her neck, could recur in
the future. This spot
is isolated and doesn't
cause her any problems,
common in lighter
colored horses.
Interaction with horses:
Gets along with familiar
horses. Generally finds
her own space with
others. She is
currently "mothering" a
new young foster horse,
Tonka.
July 2006 Update:
Araglin's had several
treatments/adjustments for
her back/head/neck that
have helped with her
bucking issue. She may
need the occasional
chiropractic adjustment
over the years, but it
appears the treatments
have worked wonders so
far.
Interaction with people:
History:
She was seized due to
neglect and awarded to
LSER/HfH.
Training / abilities:
Araglin was in training
for 60 days and was
started under saddle.
She's proved a good
student. She's on the
lazy side, but this did
improve as she got into
more of a routine with
the work. She was
drastically out of shape
and still had a baby
belly when she went into
training. She trimmed
down and muscled up.
Her
round penning skills are
wonderful and she
responds well to vocal
commands. Once she gets
to know her handler, she
warms up greatly. She's
not a spooky mare and
has offered no
buck/kick/rear when her
trainer has been on
her. As of November
12th, she's very GREEN
at a walk/trot in a
pen. She's being ridden
western in a hackamore.
Araglin has some mouth
sensitivity so her
trainer thinks it best
not to train her with a
bit at this time. She
needs a good bit of leg
to make her move
forward, but again, her
trainer feels like this
will improve with
conditioning. With
continued work, her
trainer feels she has
real potential to be a
bomb-proof type of
horse. She ground ties
for most grooming and
saddling up, but is
cautious around new
equipment and has moved
away from things a few
times. She's especially
sensitive around her
head at times, possibly
due to past rough
handling, though her
current foster mom has
not noted any head
shyness with normal
haltering.
July 2006 Update:
Araglin has done some
bucking in foster care
under saddle, part of
this is behavioral and
part of this is due to
some back issues that
required some
chiropractic
adjustments. Her back
is doing fine now and
she's been worked in
foster care, along with
a trainer. She did do
some crow hopping at
first with one rider.
But, this rider was not
easily deterred and
stuck with her. She
insisted that Araglin
continue to work and
though the little bucks
continued for 15 minutes
or so, persistence paid
off and she finally
realized that her rider
was not going to give
in, so she did. The
trainer's comment was
that Araglin had figured
out a way to get out of
working, which worked
pretty well with more
inexperienced foster
homes. Since the issue
is no longer one of back
pain, the trainer agrees
that Araglin has to do
her part too and get
down to work. She's
been worked lightly
during the chiropractic
adjustments and her new
rider is working on
ground driving more to
see if she can get
Araglin to relax more at
the trot/canter. This
is a nice mare, but
she's lazy AND smart, so
wants to get out of
whatever she
can. Persistence pays
off with her.
Total of 60 days
professional training.
Glin still needs
training and miles, but
has 4-H or youth or
adult pleasure
potential. Needs a
confident handler for
the training pieces.
Experience level
required to work with
this horse:
Strong Intermediate
under saddle because
she's very green, but
with continued riding,
could become a lower
level rider's horse.
Advanced beginner on the
ground.
Has this horse ever:
Bucked? Yes,
recently when her new
foster mom tried to
mount her recently.
Reared? No.
Kicked?
No. Bitten? No. Other?
Ground handling:
Catch? Yes.
Lead?
Yes. Tie?
Yes. Trailer?
Yes. Clip? Unknown.
Trim Feet?
Yes. Bathe?
Yes.
Special needs:
Someone to continue her
training.
Other comments:
Wonderful confirmation
and is a very pretty
mare. Araglin will need
a strong intermediate to
keep her going under
saddle. She's an
affectionate horse and a
cooperative mare on the
ground, plays well with
others and is only 10
years old. She would be
well worth someone's
time and effort.
