Temperament: Good, but still very much a baby.

Physical problems / health issues: Severe injuries on legs from barbed wire fence which are healing.  Also has umbilical hernia.

Interaction with horses: Not known.  She has to be stalled 24/7 right now.

Interaction with people: Good.  She seems to enjoy all the attention and forgives me every time I have to clean and doctor her ‘owies’ which is fairly painful for her.  She gives ‘kisses’ to my 3 year old son and has a very curious and good natured personality.  She has bitten several times and kicked twice, although it didn’t seem to be an aggressive thing so much as she was just treating me like another horse and letting me know that my trying to take care of her legs wasn’t much fun for her.

History:

Training / abilities:

Experience level required to work with this horse: Advanced.  She’s very young, injured and has had no more than a little bit of halter training.

Has this horse ever:  Bucked? Yes when playing. Reared? Yes, when startled by the barn cat.   Kicked? Yes, but in her defense her injury on her back leg is pretty severe and having it scrubbed on and medicated multiple times a day is not as much fun as it sounds.  We’re working on this and it has almost stopped. Bitten? Yes, several times and we’re working on this and its improved a lot. Other?  Arabella has had no training and can be a handful at times because of her age and lack of training/handling but she has a wonderful personality and so far has been very willing to try to do what is asked of her.  It doesn’t take her long to figure things out. She’s VERY smart!

Ground handling: Catch? Easy, although she’s stalled right now so I won’t truly be able to assess this until she’s healed enough to be turned out. Lead? She isn’t great with this, but only because she hasn’t been taught.  She can be lead well enough to get the daily routines done and she’s getting better every time. Tie? No Trailer? Yes. Although she’s new to this, she did wonderfully getting in the trailer to come home from the vet.  Once she figured out what we wanted her to do, she walked right in. She was well behaved on the trailer ride home and with a little reassurance, unloaded with no problems. Clip? Yes Trim Feet? Yes Bathe? Yes.

Special needs: She will be needing a hernia clamp in the next couple of weeks.  If this is unsuccessful, whe will need surgery to repair her umbilical hernia.

Other comments: Arabella is a wonderful little filly and I’m hopeful that she will heal before the first vet’s prediction of a recovery ‘around Christmas’, but she’ll be getting all the help and attention she needs and deserves even if it is Christmas before she’s better.
