May 4th Update – Reports are that this event has been cancelled! Thanks to everyone that put in the effort to act.

May 1, 2013 www.HorseHumane.org

There is a donkey roping competition planned for this Saturday, May 4th in Sonora, Texas. Donkeys will be roped and tortured for entertainment as part of a fundraising event benefiting Combat Marine Outdoors. Torturing donkeys is not the way to support the Marines!

TAKE ACTION!
In the past thanks to YOUR calls we have gotten donkey roping events cancelled and with your help we can put a stop to this one too!

Please make a brief, polite phone call to the organizers of this event and ask them to please cancel the donkey roping part of the event. The numbers to call are: 325-387-3244, 325-226-4450 and 713-857-6713.

Call the Consuelo Ranch who is hosting the event and ask them not to do donkey roping at their event, be brief and polite: 325-387-3346patrick2

Call Combat Marine Outdoors and politely tell them that donkey roping is extremely abusive to donkeys, donkeys can easily get their necks and legs broken when being roped. Donkeys are very intelligent, and the abuse they receive will scar them for life. Thank them for their service to our country, be brief and polite: 713-419-6023 After calling them email them as well.
Colonel Alan Orr – President
Colonel@combatmarineoutdoors.org

Rusty Hicks – Excutive Director
Rusty@combatmarineoutdoors.org

Arturo Garcia – Programs Director
MasterGuns@combatmarineoutdoors.org

We asked people on Facebook to post on Combat Marine Outdoor’s Facebook page and ask them not to torture donkeys. They deleted the posts, banned everyone and disabled commenting on their page, and then deleted their entire Facebook page. As one of our followers put it so well “Can’t man up! Oh, let’s just delete the post and pretend it never happened. Sad excuse.” We feel now the only way to help these donkeys is to take it to the media. Please contact the following TV stations in Houston and tell them about the situation.

KHOU – 713-526-1111

KTRK – 713-666-0713

KRIV – 713-479-2801

Please make the calls, emails, and forward this on to anyone that can help. Together we can put a stop to another donkey roping event!

  • What a dishearteningly insensitive practice. Fun and support surely can be had without such a vile activity.

This might be fun to a few “cowboys” but not to the poor donkey that don’t stand a chance. I hope this will be called off! I’m sure the boys can find something to do!

Please cancel the donkey roping. I have several donkeys myself and would never think of doing this to them.

E-mails sent and this link above also sent to a horse rescue discussion list.

The one to “Master” above bounced. Said his mailbox is full….YES!

Of course, I have great doubts they will listen anyway to us “bleeding hearts.”

Excellent news Sue. We need to really flood the phone lines and email tonight (if you can leave a message) and send an email and follow up tomorrow. Yes, I am sure the “master” has a full in box.

Such a cowardly thing to delete and block everyone and then delete the entire FB account. If you are too ashamed to defend this, you should cancel it!

Facebook page has been taken down and email addresses have been disabled and/or full! Marines can’t take the heat???? Why would Marines want to be associated with animal abuse?

    May 2, 2013

Where does the Texas HS stand on this? Can’t they help to stop this?

Will they dump the donkeys after using them and abusing them at the nearest auction?

As a veteran to harm a living animal for support is cruel. As a donkey supporter I beg of you to view these as animals as loving, intelligent and kind animals. Please do not rope any animal.

    My email:

Dear Colonel Orr, Mr. Rusty Hicks and Sergeant Garcia,

As someone who has always been so very proud of the U.S. Marine Corp, I am quite frankly horrified, revolted and down right ashamed that the Marine Corp would consider a Donkey Roping Contest as a “dream hunt or an outdoor adventure for severely wounded Marines, Soldiers, Airman, and Sailors and Navy Corpsmen” as stated in your Mission Statement.

As someone who lives near Camp Pendleton in Oceanside, California I always honk my horn when I see the bumper sticker “Simper Fi”. The fact that this motto of “Always Faithful” for the Marine Corp could also be attributed to the faithful Donkey is truly heartbreaking. They hauled your cannons and supplies in war. They were instrumental in settling this great country of ours. They are gentle and social animals and the brutal treatment received at the these “roping events” can scar them for life for ever trusting a human being again; many will suffer broken legs, back and necks and have to be euthanized. This is “entertainment”? I think not.

The fact that you deleted posts and banned everyone from commenting on your Facebook page and then deleted the Facebook page to me, with all due respect sirs, is a cowardly act. The proud men and women you represent do not deserve to be associated with such blatant and cruel brutality against any living creature. Do the honorable thing and cancel this event.

    Respectfully submitted,

    Rhonda Lanier

I wrote notes to all three just a half hour ago, one bounced back, but another responded right away. Here is his response….
“Combat Marine Outdoors does not endorse donkey roping in any way, and we did not set up this rodeo event. Until yesterday, I had never heard of donkey roping. I’ve spoken with the folks who are putting on the event, and told them that we would prefer that they not have donkey roping as one of the many events at the rodeo. We are one of the charities that are being hosted by this event, and we do not in any way control what events they include in their rodeo.

“Thank you very much for making us aware of this activity, and we will do a better job in the future to ensure that we are in no way a party to such activities. We did not schedule this rodeo and we did not establish what events would be held. We will know better next time.”

I pray that this person is for real. I just talked to one of the organizers (at the last of those 3 numbers listed) and there is no way he’s going to listen to anyone who doesn’t agree that this is perfectly fine entertainment. He allegedly works for the ranch–whose telephone has been disconnected–but says he has no control–and I pray that he doesn’t given his neanderthal viewpoint. He says the “donkeys are well fed”–as if that makes jerking them around and flipping them for “entertainment” justified. If someone like this is in control, there is no hope. I pray that the email response above is from someone real and with power.

      May 3, 2013
    • That’s well and good that they did not know. That does not negate the fact that they do now. It’s not enough to say “we will know better next time”. They need to give the organizers an ultimatum: pull this event from the program or they will not participate. If they don’t, they are complicent. Of course, that means they won’t get any of the proceeds from event as one of the charities.

We still need to put pressure on them to put pressure on the organizers. If they don’t, it’s is apparent that raising funds is more important to them than raising their standards to do what is right.

      May 3, 2013
    • Hi Crystal not sure if you will get this. Could you please send a copy of that email? We are trying to confirm his statement. As well as find out what did happen yesterday. Thank-you! info@horsehumane.org

entertainment? recreation? “manning up” activity? all so pointless!!!! Leave poor innocent vulnerable animals alone, what is wrong with people using animals in this activity as well as rodeo, circus, etc it is just sad and not right!

    May 2, 2013
  • Gloria Kersey

I don’t understand how this can be a sport! Why must they abuse, torture, and possibly kill an innocent animal? This is no way to raise funds for Combat Marine Outdoors! What is wrong with people?

I think this is a very bad way to collect money ,I also am saddened to hear this as the donkeys are very smart animals .We have used them to pack us and our goods into the mtns. for setting up hunting camps and I know first hand they are not the dumb creatures society plays them out to be .Even in the world of Disney the donkey and or the mule are made to look stupid.I would like to say one thing and this is not to start a bunch of (who haw) yelling and such but I would like to say that Animal rights would get a lot more positive attention if the powers that be in the movement would stop bringing attention to things like Deer hunters hunting deer and Lobster fishermen and people for that matter eating lobsters and typically ridiculous things like that. I have been out deer hunting with my grandpa my father and my son (4 generations of hunters) and PETA is walking through the woods banging pots and pans and then blocking the dirt road at the entrance to the mountains and yelling that we are all murders for being deer hunters . I am a hunter and a sportsman and even to this day when I kill an animal I am hunting I feel sympathy for this majestic creature that gave its life for my family and I to eat all winter AND I despise poachers and donate money to the Wash state dept of game so as to add to the pot for turning in poachers (a bounty so to speak) .We call them slob hunters even using the word Hunters after the slob is to good for them but its those tactics that make people resist and darn right detest the animal rights movement .Then you get legitimate animal topics and most people are unwilling to help .There are those that always will no matter but a little common sense would really help a cause that is a great cause as even my hunting buddies love animals and think that cruelty to them is wrong .The bull fighting ,the slaughter of whales, the killing of dolphins ect ect .Even the killing of elk and deer just for there Gaul bladder and antlers and not eating what you kill is wrong wrong wrong .Just saying .Its not often I ever get an opportunity to talk openly with people who you would think we have no common ground with but we do .We dont have to agree with the killing of animals for food even but we can at least look at it from a realistic point of view 🙂 By the way I will be doing all I can to stop this so called sport of donkey abuse .I also would love to see the rounding up of wild horses to be sold as food stopped .

What a terrible, heartless event! I sure hope and pray that this cruel contest will be stopped!

    May 3, 2013
  • I’ve sent emails to all of the above. I will make phone calls in the a.m. Hopefully we will have a positive outcome.God bless those poor Donkeys.

    May 3, 2013
  • OMG Animal Abuse and we call it Entertaiment…what is wrong with the human race….Shame on us…..

Now I wrote to Col.Orr and I have received a response…He says the Marines do not condone this activity and they do not control the organization who puts on this fund raiser…so best all address the concerns to the organization doing the fundraiser. He was unaware of the posted activity and said they will know better next time. It does pay to email if you can figure out the correct email as it was not proper ly posted on this site either. And that tells me, if any one had done so they too would know this.

    May 3, 2013
    • nancy

So, who is the organization if not this Combat Marine Outdoor?? It would seem that if they (this marine org) is the recipient of the “charity,” then they would have some say in what is being conducted for their benefit.

So much of this is not adding up…the Combat Marine Outdoor deleted protest posts on their FB page and then took it down??? And they say they have no control??? And the host ranch’s phone has been disconnected??? Lts wrong with this picture.

Oh–and none of the TV stations want anything to do with covering this, saying that it’s “too far away”–one told me it was 400 miles away, the next one said 800–and they’re both in Houston, so obviously, there is (convenient?) confusion in Texas and it’s the donkeys who are paying.

      May 3, 2013
      • Robin Bailey

Just called ranch number, too, still disconnected. Did leave a phone message for Rusty Hicks – told him they should speak out against the torture of an animal as a way to raise funds for them. Told him this was blood money, and that no marine would ever support this, and that he needs to make a stand. This event needs to be stopped!

        May 3, 2013
        • Robin Bailey

Just sent emails. Pamela, which email is incorrect? Mr. Garcia’s email is full it seems, Mr. Hicks appears to have gone through, and the Colonel’s appears to have gone through.

          May 3, 2013
      • Crystal

the TV stations are right, the ranch is very far away, maybe closer to San Antonio or El Paso than Houston. I tried with connections in Houston, but it is simply too far away.

        May 3, 2013
  • nancy

I just called the number for the host ranch–it has been disconnected. Wonder what that’s about.

    May 3, 2013
  • cricketgurl

I can’t believe that a “benefit” is being planned that involves the torture of innocent animals! Donkey roping should be banned PERIOD! Just wrote emails to all (included a photo of a donkey injured with horrible rope burns from this so-called “sport”) will call later this morning too. I’m appalled that the marines would let their name be associated with something so brutal, and am hoping with education and pressure from concerned people, they will cancel this event.

Just waking up out here on the west coast, but I am from Texas. I just called the first number listed. Went directly to voice mail, but there was room to leave a message, so I did. Has anybody heard the latest? Has this been canceled yet?

  • nancy

We should keep in mind that posting our outrage here is fine, but we’re preaching to the choir. Please take action, call and email and then post your findings here–that would be the most helpful as we all already agree that this is is outrageous and horrific abuse of the donkeys.

    May 3, 2013
  • Ginger

I am still calling. Number for the ranch has been disconnected. 713-419-6023 went to the voice mail of Rusty Hicks with the Marine Combat outfit. Mailbox is not full, so you can leave a message, which I did.

    May 3, 2013
  • Ginger

Ok, four of the five numbers are going to voice mail. The second number rings for a really long time before rolling to VM, so don’t give up and hang up. Mail boxes are not full today. Has anybody called Houston media? I don’t want to without first knowing the latest — has this been canceled yet? I’m on a small old mobile phone and it’s hard to get info on Google. Please advise.

    May 3, 2013
    • nancy

I called all the Houston media listed–none is interested–“too far away”–but they seemed confused on how far exactly. One said 400 miles, another said 800.

There is no FB page under the name of “American Wild Horses”–could you verify the name of the page where it says the donkey roping has been cancelled? Thanks.

      • Robin Miles

That’s why all of this needed to be verified.
I have a stomach sinking feeling that someone is lying and they are still having this sickening thing.
        We need to pray.
May God bless these poor Donkeys.

  • As the Marine Combat org is staying they are a recipient of some of the proceeds but were not aware this was one of the events on the program, please send the info about where, when this event is taking place and bombard everyone you know within driving distance and get them to raise a protest on site. The organizers have no intention to cancel.

I posted this alert on my facebook page and several friends shared it with their friends. One of those “sharers” received a note from someone who read it who said the donkey roping has been cancelled. We’re overjoyed, but would like to confirm that. Can someone from Habitat for Horses please check to see if this is true?

The sad thing is we can’t be sure.
They might be saying Cancelled to shut us up.
Who will be there to verify it?
      Not the media obviously.
And where will the Donkeys go ? to a slaughter house over the border?
All we can do at this point is pray.
      So sad.

Hopefully in the future we can find people who are connected with anti-animal cruelty groups in the vicinity of any function that is promoting events like this to be able to monitor the situation. There are all kinds of devices that can film anything now.

I understand from Horse Plus Humane Society the donkey roping did, in fact, take place on May 5th, even though the Marines & the Combat Marine Outdoors Org supposedly asked that it not be held. Seems to me, they need a little better control over what people do under their name. They are a non-profit which seems to offer some great opportunities for wounded warriers. I don’t think they want/need this kind of activity and bad press that comes with it!

    May 9, 2013
    • Shirley Ragsdale

I was afraid of this … the heat was on, so they told us what we wanted to hear. We need to find out who owns the donekys, the names of the people putting on the event and someone in the Marines organization who can be held accountable.
      This is just tragic.
