Meet Artemis

She’s gorgeous, but she prefers you admire her from a distance.

Artemis came to us in 2014 in desperately skinny shape and mostly feral. We can only imagine what kind of life she endured before her rescue, because it was immediately clear that she was terrified of people. Thankfully, she accepted food, and her weight improved quickly. However she wouldn’t stand for the farrier or dentist, and giving her regular vaccinations and other essential care was terribly difficult.

Artemis isn’t the first horse at Miracle Ranch who would rather stay in the company of other horses. Shortly after her arrival, she found friends within our herd of 250+ rescues but stood far away when we gave her horse friends attention and care.

Just remember, we call this place Miracle Ranch for a reason. In 2020, Habitat for Horses trainer Aleathia made a connection with Artemis. Over a period of months, Aleathia would simply stand nearby and give Artemis a treat when she approached. When Artemis showed signs of trust, Aleathia offered Artemis the chance to sniff a halter and eventually try it on. Nowadays, Artemis will accept essential care. She still prefers horses to people, but Aleathia has patiently shown her that humans can be kind and loving.

When you sponsor Artemis, you’re in her stall with us, assuring her that there are kind people who will always care for her.
